Our State Seal
Our State Seal was accepted in June 1906. It depicts symbols of the flags which have flown over the State of Louisiana. Objects on the shield are the turreted castles of Aragon and Castile with the rampart red lion for Leon, the Fleur de Lis of France, and the American eagle on a thunderbolt symbolizing victory. These are garlanded on each side with stalks of sugar cane and rice along with the significant dates of 1699 for France, 1764 for Spain, and 1803 for the Louisiana Purchase and America. The Cabildo, which was a prison, fort and a palace in Louisiana’s past, is placed above the shield.
